Anthony Orban
A San Bernardino County judge said Friday that she had planned to deny a new trial amid allegations of juror misconduct and sentence a former Westminster police detective convicted of rape to what would have been a life sentence.

Anthony Orban was scheduled to appear at a sentencing hearing Friday afternoon in a Rancho Cucamonga courtroom, but he hanged himself inside his jail cell hours earlier, his attorney said.

Even though sentencing did not take place as planned because of Orban's apparent suicide, the woman he raped read from her prepared statement:  "While I was victimized, I am nobody's victim."

The 26-year-old woman criticized Orban for not taking responsibility. As she neared the end of her statement, she began to choke up.

"I forgive you," she said, adding that Orban no longer had control over her life.

James Blatt, Orban's attorney, said his client had "great remorse and shame for his actions."

Orban tried to convince the jury that he was insane when he abducted the young waitress from Ontario Mills Mall in April 2010 and then brutally raped her.

He said he had no memory of the attack because of a blackout triggered by the antidepressant Zoloft.

"It's absolutely horrendous," Orban told the jury. "I can't imagine doing this to another person."

The jury convicted him of the rape and rejected his insanity defense.

After court on Friday, Blatt said Orban had no inclination about what the judge was going to decide but that "all of us knew this was a possibility."

San Bernardino County Deputy Dist. Atty. Debbie Ploghaus told reporters that Orban took the easy way out, making the day about himself when it should have belonged to the victim.
