Mike D'Antoni resigned on April 30, but the Lakers still haven't hired a head coach.
Two potential candidates came off the market on Wednesday. The Golden State Warriors agreed to terms with basketball analyst and former player Steve Kerr.
Kerr has never run a team from the bench, although he previously served as general manager for the Phoenix Suns.
Former Orlando Magic and Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy was hired by the Detroit Pistons as head coach and president of basketball operations.
The Knicks, who had courted Kerr, could look for another Phil Jackson protégé to teach the team the triangle offense. Perhaps Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis will get a call -- or even current Oklahoma City Thunder guard Derek Fisher.
Jackson was recently hired as president of the Knicks.
Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak recently said the team doesn't "intend to hire a coach any time soon, but the thought process has begun."
The list of coaching possibilities is long and might include Kevin Ollie, Mark Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy, Byron Scott, Roy Williams, John Calipari, Mike Krzyzewski, Mike Dunleavy, Billy Donovan, Lionel Hollins, Ettore Messina, George Karl, Rambis and Fisher.
