Lakers' week in review

The Lakers still haven't hired a head coach but over the last week, the team continued to prepare for Thursday's NBA draft.

On Tuesday, the Lakers worked out Kentucky forward Julius Randle, who said he does not need foot surgery to remove a screw inserted after a high school injury.

The Lakers have the seventh overall pick in the draft, possibly going with Arizona forward Aaron Gordon, according to a Times' mock draft.

Gordon came in on Friday for a second workout with the team, as did Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart and Louisiana-Lafayette guard Elfrid Payton. The Lakers also took a look at Michigan guard Nik Stauskas and P.J. Hairston of the NBA D-League's Texas Legends.

Of course there's no guarantee that the Lakers will keep their pick in the draft, with Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson a possible trade target. The Warriors are in talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves for all-star Kevin Love, and any Thompson deal would be contingent on a Love trade.

A foot injury sidelined prospective top pick Joel Embiid (Kansas), which may cause him to drop to the Lakers at seven. Even if he's out for four to six months after surgery, the Lakers would give him a serious look if available.

The Lakers are going through a rebuilding process, but the franchise hopes to quickly return to contention. To that end, all-star Kobe Bryant, in Brazil for the World Cup, said he's 100% healthy.

Oddsmakers have the Lakers as a 40-1 long shot to win the 2014-15 NBA title.
