Lewis Katz, a co-owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer, was among seven people killed when a small jet crashed in flames while taking off from a Massachusetts airport, according to airport officials and news reports.
The Gulfstream IV was taking off from Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass., outside of Boston at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday, Massachusetts Port Authority spokesman Matthew Brelis said.
No one on board survived the crash, the port authority said. The identities of the victims other than Katz were not immediately known. The plane was en route to Atlantic City, N.J.
The Associated Press reported that Katz's death was confirmed by the Inquirer's editor, Bill Marimow. Katz, 72, and partner Harold "Gerry" Lenfest gained control of the Inquirer last week in an $88-million deal.
Witnesses who heard the crash and saw the aftermath described loud booms and flames.
"We were panicked because we thought, 'What could we do other than call 911,' " Tara Harding, who was staying at a nearby hotel, told Boston.com. "It sounded like the plane was shutting down," Harding said. "Like that engine-failure sound you hear in the movies."
"I heard a big boom, and I thought at the time that someone was trying to break into my house because it shook it," said 14-year-old Jared Patterson, the Boston Globe reported. "I thought someone was like banging on the door trying to get in."
