Film and TV star Tracy Morgan was in critical condition after a vehicle he was traveling in was involved in a fatal multicar accident on the New Jersey Turnpike, police said Saturday.
Morgan, 45, was traveling back from a comedy show at a casino in Dover, Del., when the limousine bus he was in overturned after being hit by a tractor trailer. A total of six vehicles were involved in the accident, which happened about 50 miles south of New York City at 1 a.m Saturday. At least one fatality has been confirmed. Morgan was in intensive care at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Center in New Brunswick, N.J.
Hospital spokesman Peter Haigney told The Times that four males had been brought in from the accident, with three in critical condition. New Jersey State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams told the Associated Press that Morgan was among those in critical condition.
The victim who died was identified as James McNair, 63, of Peekskill, N.Y.
Morgan's publicist did not immediately reply to an email seeking further word on the comedian's condition.
The performer has been on a multicity comedy tour called "Turn It Funny." An engagement Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C., has been canceled.
Best known for his seven-year stint on "Saturday Night Live" and his semi-autobiographical turn as an incorrigible celebrity on NBC's hit comedy "30 Rock," Morgan also has fashioned a film career, starring in comedies such as "Cop Out" and "Death at a Funeral." He most recently could be heard as the voice of Luiz in the Brazil-set animated movie "Rio 2."
Morgan, known for his provocative stand-up material that has sometimes landed him in hot water, has had a number of high-profile health struggles, including with alcoholism and diabetes. He has a 1-year-old son with fiancee Megan Wollover and has three grown children from a previous relationship.
