The Ferguson, Mo., police officer who shot unarmed teenager Michael Brown was identified Friday as Darren Wilson, a six-year veteran of the department.
Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said Wilson had no prior disciplinary record. Jackson took no questions from reporters as he offered a brief timeline to the events of Saturday, when Brown was shot to death following an encounter that led to days of angry and sometimes violent protests.
According to Jackson:
Police received a call at 11:51 a.m. Saturday of a "strong-arm" robbery at an area convenience store. A box of cigars had been stolen, according to the police report.
One minute later, police were given details about the suspects. Jackson did not provide those details to reporters, but police reports said that Brown was being sought as a suspect in a convenience store robbery.
Wilson responded to the call. He encountered Brown at 12:01 p.m. Within minutes, Brown was dead, touching off days of turmoil in Ferguson. Police, citing fears for the officer's security after receiving threats, including death threats, withheld his name from the public—a source of mounting anger among demonstrators and Brown's family.
That anger erupted again after Jackson's announcement Friday as a crowd expressed skepticism that there was any robbery.
"It's a bunch of bull crap," a man who gave his name as Leon Nelson told reporters on the sidewalk after Jackson's announcement.
"If there was a robbery, we'd have [known] that day. It wouldn't take six or seven days," said a woman who did not give her name.
Most in the mainly black crowd said even vaguely linking Brown to a robbery was evidence of what they say is racism in Ferguson's overwhelmingly white Police Department.
"If it had been the other way around and a black man had killed a white kid, we'd have known in 15 minutes," the woman said. "It wouldn't have taken six or seven days."
Prior to Friday police had released few details of the shooting, saying that Brown was killed after a struggle that began in the officer's car. Several witnesses have said Brown was shot several times while retreating with his hands raised. The lack of details was repeatedly cited in public complaints about a lack of transparency in the police investigation
Local authorities are investigating the case, as are the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department.
