The son-in-law of Osama bin Laden was sentenced to life in prison on terrorism charges, the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District announced Tuesday morning.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, who served as a spokesman for the terror group, Al Qaeda, was sentenced by Judge Lewis Kaplan. The prosecution had called for the life sentence, while the defense had argued for 15 years.
Abu Ghaith was the highest ranking Al Qaeda figure to face trial on U.S. soil since the Al-Qaeda attack by four hijacked jets against New York and Washington targets on Sept. 11, 2001. He was convicted in March on conspiracy charges based in part on an Al Qaeda video used to recruit more followers for suicide missions.
"The storm of airplanes will not stop," the Kuwaiti imam warned in an October 2001 video that was widely circulated at the time and was played for the jury .
The jury also saw parts of a Sept. 12, 2001 video showing Abu Ghaith seated next to bin Laden and other top Al Qaeda leaders as they tried to explain and justify the attacks in the United States.
In his testimony during the trial, Abu Ghaith insisted his role was religious. He said he met with bin Laden because he respected the man.
"I didn't go to meet with him to bless if he had killed hundreds of Americans or not. I went to meet with him to know what he wanted," Abu Ghaith, 48, testified.
The defense argued in court papers that Abu Ghaith deserves no more than 15 years behind bars because he wasn't convicted of any acts of violence.
In its papers seeking a life sentence, the government said the defense effort to minimize Abu Ghaith's role was both absurd and offensive.
"Abu Ghaith was a terrorist who sat alongside bin Laden on the morning of Sept. 12, 2001, celebrating the murder of nearly 3,000 innocent, men, women and children the day before," prosecutors argued.
