A teenage boy was arrested inside a Glendora Wal-Mart early Wednesday after police said he started lighting stuffed animals on fire.

Glendora police said that just after midnight, the 13-year-old walked into a store aisle with Christmas decorations and an arrangement of stuffed animals, grabbed a lighter and ignited the display.

By the time firefighters arrived, a store customer had already knocked out the flames with an extinguisher, Glendora police said on Facebook.

Police arrested the juvenile "who was still in the parking lot with his family waiting for the store to reopen" after it was closed for fire cleanup, the department said on Facebook.

The boy, who was arrested on suspicion of arson, will be transferred to a juvenile facility where a judge and county prosecutors will consider whether to release the boy to his parents or if he should remain in custody pending further court appearances, said Glendora police Lt. Matt Egan.

The 24-hour Wal-Mart in Glendora is a magnet for police calls but even among those, the stuffed animal fire was "a unique occurrence," he added.

An employee inside the store who suffered from shortness of breath because of the heavy smoke was treated and released at a local hospital, officials said.
