'Birdman' dominates the Critics' Choice Movie Awards nominations

Director Alejandro G. Inarritu's  "Birdman" dominated the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.'s Critics' Choice Movie Awards nominations Monday morning, scoring 13 nods, including picture, acting ensemble, actor for Michael Keaton, supporting actor for Edward Norton and supporting actress for Emma Stone.

Wes Anderson's quirky comedy "The Grand Budapest Hotel" followed with 11 nominations, including picture, acting ensemble, actor for Ralph Fiennes, and director and original screenplay for Anderson.

"Boyhood," Richard Linklater's coming-of-age drama shot over a dozen years, earned eight Critics' Choice Movie Awards nominations including picture, supporting actor for Ethan Hawke, supporting actress for Patricia Arquette, and director and original screenplay for Linklater.

Also in contention for best picture: "Gone Girl," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "Selma," "The Theory of Everything," "Unbroken" and "Whiplash."

Joining Fiennes and Keaton in the actor race are Benedict Cumberbatch for "The Imitation Game," Jake Gyllenhaal for "Nightcrawler," David Oyelowo for "Selma" and Eddie Redmayne for "The Theory of Everything."

Vying for the actress award are Jennifer Aniston for "Cake," Marion Cotillard for "Two Days, One Night," Felicity Jones for "The Theory of Everything," Julianne Moore for "Still Alice," Rosamund Pike for "Gone Girl" and Reese Witherspoon for "Wild."

Supporting actor nominations went to Hawke, Norton, Josh Brolin for "Inherent Vice," Robert Duvall for "The Judge," Mark Ruffalo for "Foxcatcher" and J.K. Simmons for "Whiplash."

The supporting actress race consists of Arquette, Stone, Jessica Chastain for "A Most Violent Year," Keira Knightley for "The Imitation Game," Meryl Streep for "Into the Woods" and Tilda Swinton for "Snowpiercer."

Joining "Birdman," "Boyhood" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" in the acting ensemble race are "The Imitation Game," "Into the Woods" and "Selma."

Best director nominations went to Anderson, Inarritu, Linklater, Ava DuVernay for "Selma," David Fincher for "Gone Girl" and Angelina Jolie for "Unbroken."

Nominations for animated feature went to "Big Hero 6," "The Book of Life," "The Boxtrolls," "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and "The Lego Movie."

The nominations add shading to an emerging portrait of awards season. "Boyhood" has already been named the best film of 2014 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. and the New York Film Critics Circle. Last week "Birdman" — full title "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" — earned the most Screen Actor Guild and Golden Globe nominations.

The Critics Choice Awards will include special honors: Chastain will receive the first Critics' Choice MVP Award. Oscar winner Kevin Costner, whose latest film is "Black and White," is receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Oscar winner Ron Howard is receiving of the Louis XIII Critics' Choice Genius Award.

"Live With Kelly and Michael" host Michael Strahan will host "The 20th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards," broadcast live on A&E from the Hollywood Palladium on Jan. 15, the same day the Academy Award nominations are announced.
