Three people were killed and numerous others injured Wednesday night after a suspected intoxicated driver plowed into a crowd leaving a school Christmas concert in Redondo Beach, police said.
In a phone message to parents and parishioners, an official with the preschool at St. James Catholic Church said a staff member had been killed in the crash. Classes were canceled Thursday and Friday for the preschool and elementary school, so they could "grieve and support one another."
Police had not yet identified the third victim as of 7 a.m. Thursday. But authorities gave the names of two other victims as Torrance residents Mary Anne Wilson, 81, and Saeko Matsumura, 87, who died of injuries sustained in the crash outside the church.
"Thank you for your prayers and understanding," a school official said in the message.
Police said it was unclear how many people were injured because several victims -- most of whom were pedestrians -- drove themselves to local hospitals. They said 12 people were treated at the scene and transported to local hospitals. At least one child was injured in the crash, they said.
The female driver, who has not been identified, is among the injured and is receiving treatment at a local hospital, police said. They said she has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence.
According to police, she was driving north on Pacific Coast Highway at about 8 p.m. when she drove through a red light at Vincent Street, striking members of a crowd that had just left a Christmas concert at St. James Catholic Church.
People had entered the crosswalk and were headed east on Vincent when the driver struck the crowd, authorities said. After plowing into the crowd, she continued driving and headed onto the southbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway, where she collided head-on with another vehicle, police said.
Police said at a news conference Wednesday night that one of the pedestrian victims was still being carried by the vehicle before it crashed into the second vehicle.
