SoCal rain season's 'biggest storm' so far is on the way

The roads are closed, the voluntary evacuations are issued and the concrete barriers are in place. Now residents and authorities across Southern California are waiting for more rain.

Following a weekend storm that closed a highway and raised worries about devastating mudslides, area cities Tuesday braced for a two-day deluge that's been billed as the stronger of the back-to-back storms.

"This is the biggest storm of this year's rain season," which started July 1, said Andrew Rorke, senior forecaster with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. "It's just a big ol' storm. The entire state is going to be covered with rain today."

Some fear the anticipated two-day storm, which is expected to peak Tuesday afternoon, could trigger devastating rock and mudslides. Homeowners and city crews in Glendora and Azusa, among other cities, have been shoring up backyard fences and streets with concrete barriers and sandbags in case the rain destabilizes San Gabriel Mountains slopes and triggers a mudslide.

In Silverado Canyon in Orange County, county officials have issued voluntary evacuations and flash-flood watches. Forecasters estimate that the rain could pour there at a rate of three-quarters of an inch an hour Tuesday afternoon.

In Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the rain is expected to be even heavier. Residents downtown and along the coast may see up to 3 inches of rain, but it could be twice that in the mountains, Rorke said.

The potential for problems is compounded because it just rained over the weekend, officials said. Though that storm was smaller, it was big enough to trigger a rockslide that closed Pacific Coast Highway north of Malibu for the first half of the week.

"The problem is it's only two days after we've had a pretty good storm," said National Weather Service meteorologist Kathy Hoxsie. "When you don't give the soil a chance to dry out, we're expecting it could be a very notable impact."
