Authorities are searching for a male suspect after they confirmed that the body of a baby found in a San Diego County dumpster was Eliza Delacruz. The 3-week-old was abducted over the weekend after her family was shot in Long Beach.
The San Diego Sheriff's Department is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Sheriff's officials said Sunday that Eliza was found in a plastic bag along with other garbage in a dumpster behind a restaurant in Imperial Beach just off a freeway not far from the Mexico border, officials said.
Police said the gunman shot Eliza's parents and uncle. In a statement, Long Beach Police described the crimes as "heinous" and "horrific."
The search for Eliza's abductor and her parents' killer began shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, when officers responded to a call at a home in the 100 block of West 51st Street in North Long Beach, police said.
When they arrived, officers found the baby girl missing and her parents and uncle shot.
"The preliminary investigation leads detectives to believe an adult male suspect fled with the infant immediately after the shooting occurred," the statement continued.
The girl's mother and uncle remained in critical but stable condition at area hospitals Sunday, but the father has been treated and released, officials said.
Police did not identify the victims and said they do not know much about the suspect.
"Although little is known about the suspect, detectives do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence," Long Beach police officials said in a statement Sunday.
Police are urging anyone who may know something about the case to call the Long Beach Police Department Communications Center at (562) 435-6711. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may call (800) 222-TIPS (8477) or text TIPLA plus the tip to 274637 or visit www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
