Sheldon Silver, who has served as speaker of the New York Assembly for more than two decades, was arrested Thursday, according to federal officials.
Silver, a Democrat who represents Manhattan, was taken into custody at FBI headquarters in New York City.
The powerful state lawmaker is expected to appear in court Thursday, though details on the charges in the case were not immediately available.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of New York, which is prosecuting the case, said a news conference will be held Thursday afternoon in New York.
Michael Whyland, Silver's spokesman, did not immediately return an email and phone calls seeking comment.
An investigation into Silver began last year and focused on payments he received from the law firm Goldberg & Iryami that he failed to highlight on his annual financial disclosure filings with the state.
The investigation by federal officials began after Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo shuttered a state anti-corruption commission in 2013.
Silver's arrest comes a month after another prominent New York politician, former GOP U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, resigned after he pleaded guilty to tax evasion.
