New York City authorities were searching early Tuesday for a suspect who shot and wounded two police officers – one critically – during an armed robbery investigation in the Bronx.
The officers were taken to a Bronx hospital where one officer, a 30-year-old man who suffered gunshot wounds to his left arm and lower back, remained in critical condition and was in surgery early Tuesday. The other officer, a 38-year-old man, was shot in the chest and was in stable condition. Their names have not yet been released.
The officers were part of a plainclothes anti-crime team searching for suspects wanted in an armed robbery that occurred at a grocery store shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday, said New York Police Commissioner William J. Bratton in a statement.
The officers spotted two possible suspects several blocks away from the grocery store. As they approached them, one of the men went inside a Chinese restaurant and the other stayed outside, Bratton said. When the officers walked toward the suspect who was outside, the suspect who had been inside the restaurant came out and shot the two officers, who fired back, at about 10:35 p.m.
The two suspects then ran one block away, carjacked a white Camaro and later abandoned it, Bratton said in the statement. Investigators also recovered a revolver near the car. The New York Police Department has released video surveillance from the robbery and a photo of the recovered gun.
Detectives are still determining whether the suspect who shot the officers was involved in the reported robbery. Police also said they were notified about a man who went to a hospital in upper Manhattan with a gunshot wound to his back shortly after the incident and are investigating whether that man is connected to the shooting.
The shootings happened as the NYPD continued to reel from the Dec. 20 shooting deaths of two patrolmen by an assailant who had vowed to avenge the deaths of black people at the hands of police.
