The Lakers hit the All-Star break with a six-game losing streak and a 13-40 record. The team played two games in Week 16, losing to the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers.
Ty Lawson was a huge problem for the Lakers at Staples Center on Tuesday, helping the Nuggets to a 106-96 win. Lakers rookie Jordan Clarkson said Lawson was one of the toughest tests he's faced since taking over as the team's starting point guard.
The Lakers traveled to Portland the following night, falling to the Blazers, 102-86 -- their 40th loss in 53 games.
Coach Byron Scott said he wanted his team to get some rest through the All-Star vacation, but not too much. He was also eager to see how Nick Young handles his slump.
With the mounting losses, the Lakers are in the chase, not for playoffs, but for lottery position.
Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said Lakers owner/executive Jim Buss needs to own up to his mistakes.
Injured Kobe Bryant is seeking a career "rebirth" next season.
Finally, Clarkson is getting a chance to prove he can be a starter.
