The Super Bowl of fashion that is the Oscars red carpet is upon us, and the quarterbacking has officially begun.
The Oscars is mostly a game of big European fashion houses, because they are the ones with the most money to throw around to sign actresses to lucrative fragrance deals, dressing contracts, or both, and they have the couture workrooms to create custom gowns.
Looking at the some of the nominees in the lead and supporting actress categories, we can be pretty sure Keira Knightley ("The Imitation Game"), who is the face of Coco Mademoiselle, will be wearing a custom Chanel maternity style. Marion Cotillard ("Two Days, One Night"), the face of Lady Dior, is probably a lock for a custom couture design by Dior's Raf Simons.
Julianne Moore ("Still Alice") wore custom Givenchy for the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards, so another custom design by Riccardo Tisci is more than likely. (Then again, Moore was also at the Hugo Boss show at New York Fashion Week, suggesting that Boss designer Jason Wu could be whipping up something for her, though red carpet wear is not really in Boss' playbook.)
At one time, Reese Witherspoon ("Wild") had a contract with Carolina Herrera, so it's possible she could be wearing a custom look from the New York-based designer.
Rosamund Pike ("Gone Girl") is anyone's guess, though it would be great if she went with a British designer, perhaps Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. Another wild card is Felicity Jones. I'm thinking she might go Italian, with Prada, Valentino or Dolce & Gabbana, though she's worn just about every designer out there, so it's hard to predict.
