San Francisco: Fisherman's Wharf area to gain renovated Hotel Zephyr

Looking for a San Francisco hotel with a fun zone that's not just for kids?

You're in luck. In what sounds more cruise ship than hotel, the waterfront Hotel Zephyr coming in May is a makeover of the current Radisson Hotel Fisherman's Wharf at 250 Beach St. in San Francisco. (The hotel remains open as a Radisson until the renovation is completed).

The 361-room hotel has been redone with a nautical theme and a vibe it describes in an announcement as "irreverent, approachable and genuine."

What won't change are room views of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. More than 60 of the redone rooms will have balconies.

Hotel Zephyr began the $29-million transformation in December with the creation of a "fun deck" that's more than 11,000 square feet. From a peek at the website, games, fire pits and comfy lounging seem to bring on the fun factor.

Dawson Design Associates contributes the look and feel of the inside. The company used recycled cargo containers and shipping crates as some of the design elements.

Reservations may be made after May, the website says.
