Police in Ventura are looking for a group of teenage boys suspected of attacking a homeless man with a knife and bat in a parking garage Sunday night.

The attack occurred before 8 p.m. on the third level of the beachside parking garage in the 400 block of Harbor Boulevard, Ventura police said in a statement.

Five boys between 15 and 17 years old approached a homeless man in the parking structure and asked him for a lighter, police said, and when the man complied, one of the boys hit him in the head with a baseball bat.

Authorities said the group then stabbed the man six times and beat him with the bat as he tried to run away. They only stopped attacking him when he made it to the harbor promenade, police said.

The man was found by officers and is expected to survive, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the attack or has information on the incident is being asked to call the Ventura Police Department at (805) 339-4416.
