State lawmakers are expected to be lobbied from beyond the grave on Wednesday when they hear videotaped testimony in favor of an assisted-death bill from Brittany Maynard, who ended her life last November in Oregon to avoid further suffering from brain cancer.
Maynard, a former California resident, hastened her own death using drugs prescribed by a physician, which is legal in Oregon but currently not allowed in California.
Before her death, Maynard, 29, prepared written and videotaped testimony urging other states to adopt assisted-death laws like those in Oregon and four other states.
Her videotaped testimony is scheduled to be released by her husband and mother Tuesday morning before it is played for an afternoon hearing of the Senate Health Committee, which is considering the California End-of-Life Option Act.
SB 128 would allow a mentally competent, terminally ill adult California resident in the final stages of life to request aid-in-dying medication from a physician, according to its authors, Democratic Sens. Lois Wolk of Davis and Bill Monning of Carmel.
Maynard's testimony will also be used to advocate for similar assisted-death bills pending in 16 other states and Washington, D.C.
Legislation to permit assisted-death in California has failed twice, opposed on religious grounds as well as by many physicians.
