A Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a man who led officers on a pursuit early Thursday and then collided with the passenger side of an LAPD vehicle in an apparent attempt to escape, officials said.
The chase began when the man, who has yet to be identified, sped away from LAPD officers who tried to pull him over at Magnolia Boulevard and Riverton Avenue in North Hollywood about 1:45 a.m., said Officer Liliana Preciado. Officers tried to pull the car over because it had paper plates and was "driving erratically," she said.
Officers gave chase and followed him into Burbank, where the man drove into a short cul-de-sac in the 4100 block of West National Avenue and was cornered. The man turned his car around and hit the passenger side of an LAPD vehicle where an officer was sitting during his attempt to escape, Preciado said.
Police initially said it appeared the man had deliberately rammed the vehicle. Further investigation showed "he was not ramming the vehicle, it was a straight collision," Preciado said.
An officer sitting in the passenger seat of the LAPD vehicle shot the driver after the crash. Police said they they do not yet know if the suspect was armed.
After the officer opened fire, the man ran out of his car down an alley, where he collapsed. Burbank firefighters were called to the scene and pronounced the man dead, Preciado said. No officers were injured in the incident.
The vehicle the man was driving turned out to be stolen, Preciado said.
