Two men charged with aiding Copenhagen attacks

Danish police charged two men Monday with helping the gunman who carried out two fatal shootings in Copenhagen over the weekend.

The suspected gunman was shot and killed by police, hours after attacks on a free-speech debate and at a synagogue that left two dead and five police officers injured.

Authorities launched a massive police operation to find anyone who may have provided assistance the suspect.

"The two men are charged with helping the perpetrator with advice and deeds," police said in a statement.

The pair appeared before a magistrate in Copenhagen in a closed custody hearing.

They were arrested Sunday and are charged with helping the gunman get his hands on the weapon and dispose of it, and also providing him somewhere to hide after the attacks.

A defense lawyer for one of the men told reporters at the court that they deny the charges.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the suspected gunman, but described him as a 22-year-old Danish-born man with a criminal past and known gang affiliations. He was on the intelligence service's radar and may have been inspired by Islamic State, officials said.

Police reportedly were also investigating whether he had spent time in Iraq or Syria and was trying to imitate last month's attacks in Paris on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Film director Finn Norgaard, 55, was killed in the first shooting at the free-speech debate.

The second slain man was identified as Dan Uzan, 37, who was killed outside a synagogue where a bat mitzvah ceremony was taking place.

Flags were flying at half staff at government buildings across Denmark on Monday, and a memorial was expected to take place in the evening in front of the cultural center where the first shooting took place.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt was expected to attend.

Thorning-Schmidt held a news conference earlier Monday where she said there was no indication that the suspected gunman was part of a cell and the attack would not deter Denmark from continuing to help the coalition of international governments carry out airstrikes on the Islamic State.

"We are fighting together, also with countries from the region, to combat [the Islamic state] and we will continue to do that," she said.

Thorning-Schmidt said the attack on the Jewish community was "an attack on all of Denmark" and that security at synagogues had been strengthened in the wake of the Paris attacks in January, which included a deadly hostage situation at a kosher grocery.

She also said police had immediately increased protection around synagogues after the first attack on Saturday afternoon as a precaution, but there were reports in Danish media that the gunman managed to elude law enforcement by pretending he was drunk and stumbling right up to the building.

"I am deeply sad by the loss of two civilians," she said but praised the swift response of law enforcement. "This could have turned into a much worse incident. We were lucky."
